Coolies

Being of Chinese-American descent myself, I am particularly interested in the Chinese Railroad workers of the mid/late 19th century. Although my family line was on the East Coast, the time period roughly coincides with the insurge of Chinese Immigrants to the west, and I wonder what kind of opposition my great-grandfather might have faced; the Chinese Exclusion Act wasn’t legally repealed until 1943.

Here are some photographs of Chinese laborers (mostly rail).

DOROTHY & JIMMY

Turning to my mother’s side of the family – here is a photo of my great-grandmother, Dorothy, and my great-grandfather’s nephew, Jimmy. This photo was probably taken in Baltimore, MD, in 1936 or 1937.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

64 years ago today my paternal grandparents were married. In their honor here are a couple of photos of them on their honeymoon.

DAPHNE

SO, about that dog. A few days before our first anniversary (which was May 29th – a very happy day!) we went to the Oregon Humane Society to check out a dog we had seen on their website. In a serendipitous turn of events, the dog we went to meet was unable to have visitors due to an ‘alteration’ operation earlier that day. While looking at the other dogs up for adoption, we stumbled upon “Doodle Bug”. She positively melted when we went up to her kennel. We both got a little teary-eyed, and knew she was picking us! For safe measure we took her into one of the meet-and-greet runs where this shy little girl just won our hearts.

Here are a few pictures of Daphne (we lost the name “Doodle Bug”)

Another yard shot – showing off the bandana!

Note: We mulled this one over for months before we knew we were ready and willing to adopt a dog – we didn’t just decide to go into OHS on a whim!

EPIPHYTES AND BROMELAIDS

About two months ago my love and I went on a family trip to Florida. We took a stroll through the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, part of the commonly known Everglades. Before our trip Nathaniel borrowed “Orchids and Other Air Plants of the Everglades National Park” from the library so I could whet my appetite. I absolutely love epiphytes and bromelaids! Upon witnessing these plants in the wild, I nearly fell to the floor (of the boardwalk) in sheer delight! Here are few photos of the delightful plants that range from coin-size to arm-load size. Also I included a few photos of some of the fauna we came upon.

OREGON GARDEN

Here’s a few snapshots from last weekend – Nathaniel and I headed to the Oregon Garden and simply lost ourselves in a beautiful day.

MY GRANDMA’S BLOG

Every day my grandma documents her life through pictures and emails them to me. I saved these emails, planning to make a book for her, but with a computer crash I lost them all. So I am now publishing her photos through this blog. The title of each post is the subject line of each email. Maybe some day I will share this blog with her. In the meantime, enjoy!
